Part of the range continues today to be 'handmade', bristles are threaded through drilled holes in the brush back and secured with fine wires; timbers are shaped and polished using 200 year old techniques. Woods Used In Brush Making
Beechwood: There are several types of beechwood, native to temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The American beech, native to eastern North America, and the European beech, found throughout England and Eurasia. Beechwood, a hard strong wood is often used for flooring, containers, plywood and tool handles.
Satinwood: A deciduous tree found in India and Sri Lanka. Satinwood is a hard wood, yellowish in color, and is a close-grained wood. Often used in cabinet work and decorative paneling.
Ebony Wood: Ebony trees are small in size but big in providing a type of wood that is dense and heavy. Found in the tropical rainforest's of Africa, India, Ceylon, Malaysia and Indonesia, the bark of ebony is tan and generally light in color. The inner portion of the tree is fine-grained, dense, dark colored, strong and heavy, and has been prized for centuries in making a variety of items including musical instruments, chess pieces, buttons and wood shafts and handles.
